Brief History

The Municipality of Sangre Grande is situated in northeast Trinidad and is bounded on the south by the Municipality of Mayaro/Rio Claro and on the southwest by Couva/Tabaquite/Talparo and by Tunapuna/Piarco on the west. The Region is fringed by the Atlantic Ocean on the east and with a series of bays, and by the Caribbean Sea in the north. Sangre Grande covers approximately 898.9 square kilometres.


The Municipality is largely rural in character with 41 communities which are located along the major arterial network and at their main intersections.

Farmers' Seminar on Climate Change: Management of Crops Throughout Flood, Drought and Heat

In August 2024, eighty three (83) farmers, aspiring farmers and home gardeners participated in the session: "Farmers' Seminar on Climate Change: Management of Crops Throughout Flood, Drought and Heat". This was hosted by MIATD-MarVista Institute for Agriculture, Training & Development in collaboration with Republic Bank's 'Power To Make a Difference' Programme and the Local Economic Development Unit, Sangre Grande Regional Corporation.

Information Session - NEDCO

The Corporation concluded its Information Session in collaboration with NEDCO East Branch in August, 2024. Thirty-five (35) participants joined to gain valuable insights on topics that included: Building a Good Credit History as a Small Business Owner; NEDCO Loan Promotions; Micro and Small Business (MSB) Grant; and other services offered by NEDCO. The session was facilitated by Ms. Celene Mendoza, Senior Business Relationship Officer of NEDCO East Branch.

Agri-Project Session Training

Also in August, the Corporation conducted the second session of their Agri-Project with trainees of CCC NE Region - Sangre Grande led by young farmer, La Quan Pearie of Quan's Farm. Fifty five (55) trainees in attendance were introduced to topics on the Importance of Crop Production; Types of Crops; and Historical Development of Crop Production. The main takeaway from this session was to deepen trainees' understanding and appreciation for crop production so that they leave inspired to contribute to the agricultural sector.
