Point Fortin Borough Corporation
Brief History
Point Fortin has a rich history known for its flourishing sugar estates before the abolition of slavery in 1838. Thereafter, the region was defined mainly by its three main agricultural estates under cocoa and coconut cultivation. After the discovery of petroleum in the area in 1906, the town grew into a major oil producing hub and the landscape has since evolved with the expansion of the oil industry from the 1940s to the 1980s, culminating in its elevation to the status of Borough in 1980.
