Our long history shows that the transition from the Spanish Cabildo to an English-style municipality began in the 19th century. It was in 1840, that "Ordinance No. 6" transformed the Cabildo (a unit of local government that was originally established in St. Joseph, then later in Port of Spain) into the "Town Council of Port of Spain". Over several decades, the English-style system was itself transformed through several Ordinances into the 14 Municipal Corporations we know today as seen below in this directory.
